The launch of the international surfing competition Amazing Geopark Adventure Tourism (AGAT) 2017 in West Java was held on Oct. 14.
Attending the event was tourism minister Arief Yahya, who during his speech mentioned the Geopark Ciletuh tourist attraction.
“Geopark Ciletuh is really great, so is Amazing Geopark Adventure Tourism, both need to be professionally maintained,” told Arief.
“The place comprises of mountain, waterfalls, paddy fields and estuary. It has a huge potential, hence we need to develop it quickly to improve the locals’ economy,” he added.
In August 2017, a team from UNESCO visited the site to assess whether Geopark Ciletuh can be eligible for the title of UNESCO Global Geopark (UGG).
With the theme 'Cimaja Geosurf Challenge, Our Amazing Adventure', the surfing competition was held at Cimaja Beach, located in the Geopark Ciletuh area.
“AGAT 2017 is being held to introduce Geopark Ciletuh – Palabuhanratu as a world-class tourist destination as well as preparing the locals to manage the tourist area in sustainable and eco-friendly ways,” said Sukabumi regent Marwan Hamani.
The competition was joined by 14 professional international surfers from United States, Australia, Italy, United Kingdom, Japan, Canada, Maldives, Morocco, Philippines, Singapore, New Zealand, Thailand and Taiwan.
Representing Indonesia was 14 surfers from Bali, Banten, Bengkulu, Jakarta, East Java, West Nusa Tenggara, West Sumatra, North Sumatra, South Sumatra, Yogyakarta and West Java.
There were also 35 advanced surfers from West Java, with the majority coming from Sukabumi, who took part in the competition. Additionally, 21 villages in eight districts located nearby Geopark Ciletuh Palabuhanratu also sent out their representatives for a coaching clinic and surfing course. (JakartaPost)
